Anansesem Si Soooooo!

Around the ages of 3 to 6 years old, I spent some time in Ghana, West Africa. The motherland! Originally, my parents are from Ghana....Kumasi, Ashanti Region to be exact. I spent about 4-6 years of my childhood in Ghana. It was such a wonderful experience.

In the evening times, my cousins and I used to sit outside of our family home and talk. Each individual were to share their own "Anansesem." Before I go on, I'll explain what Anansesem is. Anansi means spider in the english language. Anansi, in the Ghanain culture, is taught to be a wise spider. Anansesem are fictional stories with very deep meanings and lessons that are essential to life. Anansesem are told with such passion, with great meanings that most people, especially children, believed it!

Now back to the story....

Each of us, my cousins and I, were to share our own "Anansesem" based on the lessons and principals of life and the wisdoms that we have acquired so far in our young lives. What made this experience comical was the fact that many of us were between the ages of 3-7 years of age! Imagine listening and watching a three year old make up a story with the little wisdom that she has....

These stories, despite its unrealness, made a great impact in our lives. I call it the journey to wisdom. The usage of the spider and other animals in the animal kingdom was ways to simplify or even animate concepts that was important in the formation of our morality and understanding of the society that we live in.

"Anansesem si soooo" is an exclaimation that every child makes before they tell their story. It is like a pre-intro.

If the story that a particular child told does not add up, the whole group yelled: " Anansesem si soooo, To ni y3"  Which means that your story doesn't add up, so tell it properly!lol! I used to get yelled at all the time. *Kanye West shrug* I couldn't wrap my little canadian brain around the art of Anansesem.

Thus, this blog is like a documentation of the my experiences in life. This blog will document my journey to wisdom...and everyday Mumbo Jumbo!

Little OrangeMoon at age 3 on her journey to wisdom! Lol, actually on that day I learned to stay away from my mothers makeup bag....
Sorry Mommy!

Blessings.
